http://www.igc.org/utwcwa
The UTW joins a long line of labor organizations who
have occupied the building, formerly known as the Labor
Temple. UTW has hundreds of members drawn from all of
San Francisco's major cab garages, and many smaller
companies as well. Although it offers many benefits
to members, the main reason for joining is to be part
of an organization devoted to the cause of drivers'
rights. UTW offers drivers advice, assistance and legal
referrals when cab companies attempt to deny them workers'
compensation, unemployment or other benefits they are
entitled to under the law. It publishes the quarterly
ormed in September 1999 with the intent of safeguarding
the building from exploitative development and preserving
it as the home of numerous non-profit cultural, social
service and activists' organizations, artists studios,
small local businesses, and unions. The RTA is working
to explore and pursue all opportunities that would give
it control and ownership of the Redstone Building.
